Door of Hope food bank collects more than 850 pounds of donations

The staff at the Door of Hope had two goals in mind during this year’s food drive. They wanted to exceed last year’s total of 700 pounds, and join forces with North Battleford to beat Prince Albert’s food bank in a friendly competition. Their first objective is complete, and the results of the second will be revealed this weekend.

The food drive took place in Meadow Lake May 23, and thanks to the generosity of residents who left bags of food on their front steps, more than 850 pounds of food was collected. Food Bank Co-ordinator Derek Loseth said the food drive was a success because of the efforts of many.

“We get volunteers to help us, who each have a section of town,” he said. “They drive around and see if anyone left bags out and when they do they grab it, bring it back, and we weigh it.”

Loseth said support for the Door of Hope’s food bank and soup kitchen is welcome any time of year, but the summer collection campaign really helps the organization and its clients a lot.
