Canada’s 151st birthday to be celebrated around Meadow Lake region

Jun 20, 2018 | 12:00 PM

Last year’s sesquicentennial celebration marked 150 years since Canada’s confederation, but the country’s 151st will also be celebrated in style in the Meadow Lake region in just over a week.

In Meadow Lake, celebrations at the Lion’s Park PineRidge Ford Amphitheatre will start at 6 p.m. with a hot dog supper, concert, and fireworks later in the night. This year’s event was organized by the Meadow Lake and District Chamber of Commerce. Administrator Adriane Ouellette said this year’s focus was on highlighting the city’s many musical acts.

“I’ve been working together with [local musician] Marty Bishop,” she said. “He’s got Katelyn Morin singing ‘O Canada,’ Loretta King and Just the Boyz, as well Sound Dogs, Lee Bell and some other local artists. It’s always wonderful if you can showcase local talent.”

In Loon Lake, a pancake breakfast will be a tasty start to the day at 8 a.m., with a church service to follow at 9:30. The parade starts at 11 a.m. and there will be burgers at the Legion and pie at the Big Bear Museum. Many community groups, like the local legion and 4-H club, will be involved, and the day will be capped off with fireworks at dusk at Jumbo Beach, weather permitting.

Goodsoil will host a parade at 11 a.m., with a barbecue to follow at 12 p.m.

Kimball Lake, in the Meadow Lake Provincial Park, will be bustling, with a craft at 1 p.m., cake, face painting, Peter Puffin’s Whale Tales and a presentation from the Saskatchewan Fur Trappers at 2 p.m.

Green Lake’s all-day extravaganza will start with a pancake breakfast and will include a float and bike parade, bouncy castles, a petting zoo, live entertainment, and a horseshoe tournament. The day will end with a colourful bang with a fireworks display at 11 p.m.
