Dance camp teaches positivity and performance

Jul 18, 2018 | 4:44 PM

A new local camp is encouraging young girls to have fun, be comfortable with themselves, and learn some new dance moves.

Laura Ogilvie teaches dance classes on a regular basis during the school year, but has never offered a summer camp, so this year’s inaugural activity is a new venture. She herself took jazz style classes growing up in the community, and also took classes in Calgary with a family member, learning other styles including hip-hop and dramatic lyrical.

This week’s camp is a fitness dance class for girls aged seven to 13, and Ogilvie said she focuses on good exercise, rather than perfecting the moves.

“I think it’s a fantastic program for girls to have,” Ogilvie said. “I think it makes them come out of their shells, be comfortable with their bodies. Girls can sometimes tend to be shy and hide, and I just feel like it’s somewhere they can express themselves.”

She said the feedback has been amazing from both parents and participants. She said the parents have been sending her messages after the camp each day this sharing the positive news from their daughters.

“That warms my heart,” Ogilvie said. “I feel like Meadow Lake is doing a great job bringing drama programs in the schools now, compared to when I was a kid, and dance just goes hand-in-hand with that.”
